Duddingston through again on play-off hole
The Mail on Sunday 14 Aug 2016 DETERMINED Karen Bell edged tiny Duddingston into the last 16 of The Mail on Sunday Classic with an exciting sudden-death victory over Scottish rivals Drumpellier, writes Cara Sloman. The Edinburgh club only has 10 playing lady members, but they look strong contenders in the world’s largest golf club team event and are just two matches away from a place in the grand finals at El Rompido in Spain. Bell, off 14, was three up with three to play in her individual match, but Susan Greenshields came back for a crucial half which forced the decider. Bell’s fighting spirit put the home side through after she parred the challenging 19th when she chipped in to within two feet and sunk the pressure putt. This was the third shoot-out for the club in this year’s tournament and Bell’s second. Team captain Karen Knight said: ‘Each match has been very tight. Karen stands up well under pressure, which is why she is in last.’ It is a record run for the club which was established in 1895 and they now face Hartlepool at home in the eighth round. Knight said: ‘We have a small and very friendly team. There are only 10 of us, but everyone wants to play. People are putting themselves out. Our entire pool of ladies have contributed to getting us this far. ‘While we all want to win our individual games, it’s not letting the team down that keeps us focused.’ The last four men’s and women’s teams will compete in November in Andalusia to be crowned champions. Knight added: ‘We’re trying to keep a cool head, but it’s not easy. Team selection will be harder because everyone just so excited and wants to be involved.’
